Perfectionism OCD
What is Perfectionism OCD?
Perfectionism OCD is a subtype of OCD characterized by persistent, intrusive thoughts that something is not right, not complete, or not good enough, followed by compulsive behaviors to fix, redo, or avoid altogether. It goes far beyond having high standards or taking pride in your work. Perfectionism OCD is a relentless cycle that quietly steals time, energy, and peace of mind.
It can show up in every area of life including work, relationships, appearance, creative projects, and everyday tasks. The exhausting part is that no matter how many times something is checked, redone, or avoided, the relief never lasts. The doubt always comes back.

-

-
What if I make a mistake I cannot take back?
-
What if I submit this and it is wrong?
-
I need to get this exactly right before I can move forward

How Do I Know If This Is OCD?
Many people identify as perfectionists and wear it as a badge of honor. Perfectionism OCD is different. It is not about wanting to do well. It is about an unrelenting sense of doubt and wrongness that does not go away no matter how much effort is put in. If you find yourself redoing things that are already done well, avoiding tasks entirely because they might not be perfect, or spending hours on something that should take minutes, that is not ambition. That is OCD asking for just one more check.
How is Perfectionism OCD Treated?
The gold standard treatment for Perfectionism OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). In ERP, we work together to intentionally face the discomfort of uncertainty and imperfection without engaging in compulsions to relieve it. This might look like submitting work without checking it a second time, leaving a task intentionally incomplete, or resisting the urge to seek reassurance after making a decision.
Over time your brain learns that imperfection is tolerable and that the fear of getting something wrong does not require a compulsive response.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is woven into treatment as well, helping you reconnect with your values and take meaningful action in your life rather than waiting for the perfect moment that OCD promises is just one more check away.
A Note on Self-Compassion
Perfectionism OCD often shows up loudest in people who care deeply, work hard, and hold themselves to an incredibly high standard. If that sounds like you, that drive and dedication are not the problem. OCD has simply found a way to weaponize the things you value most. You deserve to create, work, and live without the weight of constant doubt telling you it is never enough. Because it is. And so are you.
